Résumé
La prison est un espace qui, de par sa fonction sociale, sa forme architecturale et son organisation interne, impose une expérience résidentielle exceptionnelle aux personnes qui y sont détenues. On se focalise dans cet article sur l’espace cellulaire afin d’interroger les modalités de sa domestication par les détenus. On montre dans un premier temps que malgré les contraintes architecturales, règlementaires et la promiscuité, les détenus parviennent à s’approprier cet espace. Si un certain nombre d’aménagements et de pratiques s’observent dans la plupart des cellules, on constate que les modalités de cette appropriation varient selon les caractéristiques sociales et le passé résidentiel des personnes.
Summary
The social function, the architectural form and the internal organization of prisons impose an exceptional residential experience to those who are forced to live in them. In this article, we focus on cell space and we examine the modalities of its domestication by inmates. We show firstly that despite the architectural and regulatory constraints and the lack of privacy, prisoners succeed in appropriating this space. If similar practices are found in most cells, we also find that this appropriation varies according to the social characteristics and the residential past of inmates.
